What is MTD?

Making Tax Digital, explained.

HMRC's Making Tax Digital programme replaces the old once-a-year Self Assessment with four quarterly digital submissions plus a Final Declaration. From April 2026, MTD is mandatory for self-employed people earning over £50,000 — and it expands every year, eventually covering all CIS workers, sole traders and landlords.

The headline problems for most workers:

  • Four deadlines a year, not one. Miss any one of them and HMRC fines start at £100 and compound from there.
  • You can't use spreadsheets directly. Submissions must go through HMRC-approved bridging software — not a free option.
  • CIS deductions get more complex. Your CIS at source needs reconciling against each quarterly position, not just once at year-end.
  • You need digital records. Paper receipts in a shoebox are no longer enough — HMRC require digitised, linked records.

That's where Maximum Rebate comes in. We don't just file your MTD returns — we own the entire process, end-to-end, with no software for you to learn and no extra cost on top of what you'd normally pay an accountant.

The technology behind it

Powered by SmartScan IT Group · TaxSense™

We didn't bolt MTD onto an old workflow. We commissioned our sister company, SmartScan IT Group, to build a bespoke automation platform that connects directly to HMRC, your CIS contractors, and your real-time tax position.

Airtable client database

Every client, every quarter, every CIS deduction — recorded in our secure UK-hosted client database. One source of truth, accessible to your dedicated account manager.

Make automation engine

Make (formerly Integromat) orchestrates the whole workflow — pulling CIS statements, updating quarterly figures, triggering deadline reminders, and routing data to HMRC's MTD API.

123 Sheets · HMRC MTD bridge

Submissions go through 123 Sheets, an HMRC-approved MTD bridging provider. We hold the connection, you don't pay the licence.

Live client portal

Sign in to your private dashboard any time to see your live MTD position, deadlines, filed quarters and downloadable documents. Updated automatically as your account manager confirms each quarter.

WhatsApp account manager

Direct WhatsApp line to your named account manager. Send a receipt, ask a question, get a quick answer — same day, no phone tag.

Bank-grade encryption

All credentials encrypted in transit (256-bit TLS) and at rest. GDPR-compliant, ICO-registered, hosted entirely in the UK.

Common questions

Quick answers on MTD

Yes — once MTD applies to you, HMRC requires four quarterly updates plus a Final Declaration. The good news: you don't have to do any of it. We handle every submission on your behalf.

From April 2026, MTD applies to self-employed people and landlords earning over £50,000. From April 2027, it drops to £30,000. From April 2028, £20,000. If you're CIS, sole trader or self-employed, you'll be in scope sooner rather than later.

No. Our subscription covers the HMRC-approved 123 Sheets bridging licence. You don't need QuickBooks, Xero, FreeAgent or anything else. Just send us your receipts and statements as you get them.

You won't — that's the whole point of having us. Deadlines are baked into our automation and your account manager confirms each filing well in advance. Since launching MTD Complete, our clients have had zero late-filing penalties.
